You ride a quad bike in a small guided group on private trails in the hills in the middle of the island. Every park describes the same basic shape: you get a helmet and a short briefing, you do some practice laps at the base, and then a guide leads the group out on the trail. Routes pass jungle, coconut plantations, viewpoints and, on the longer tours, a waterfall stop.
The quads are automatic, so there are no gears to think about. The group rides at the pace of the slowest rider. That is good news if you are new to this, and worth knowing if you are not: on a busy mixed group you will not be setting your own speed.

The 1 hour tours are a taster: practice laps plus a short trail loop. Good if you just want to try a quad or you are short on time.
The 2 hour tours are the middle option at most parks, and Samui Quad Motor names its 2 hour waterfall tour as its most popular. You get a proper trail ride and usually a viewpoint or waterfall stop.
The 3 and 4 hour tours go deeper into the hills and add more stops. Orange Wave's 3 hour safari includes a Thai lunch and a hidden waterfall. Jungle Quad's 4 hour tour lists a waterfall, a temple and the Magic Garden. Expect these to feel like a half day once pickup is included.

No. The tours run on private tracks and trails with a guide, not on public roads, so no driving licence is required. You should be comfortable steering an automatic vehicle. Yes at most parks, as passengers on a double quad with an adult driving. Minimum ages differ per park and per tour, so always confirm your child's age and the route when you book. As an example of how pricing works: X-Quad charges ฿200 to ฿300 extra for a child under 10 riding as a passenger.

You can ride all year on Koh Samui. Roughly January to April is the driest and easiest window. October to December is the wet season: trails get muddy and slippery, which some riders love and some hate. Light rain rarely stops a tour. After heavy rain, routes can change, so confirm with the park on the day. Morning starts beat the midday heat.
One honest note on waterfalls: Samui's waterfalls are seasonal. In the dry months a "waterfall stop" can be a trickle. If the waterfall is the main reason you are booking, ask the park how it is flowing that week.
